http://www.wdcs.org The Nagoya Port Aquarium in Japan opened Japan's biggest captive cetacean facility on November 1st, displaying belugas captured in Russian waters and bottlenose dolphins captured in Japanese waters. Throughout its planning, the Aquarium has also stated its intention to display captive orcas. We are very concerned that the aquarium will import wild-caught orcas and that a little-known orca population found off Far East Russia may be the target of live captures for captive display. In 1999, the Norwegian government refused a permit to allow the Nagoya Port Aquarium to capture six live orcas in its waters for public display. This refusal followed a international outcry from NGOs such as yourselves. We need your help to be able to do this again. Please write to the Russian government and ask them not to allow the capture and export of orcas from its waters. Please also write to the Japanese government and ask them not to allow orcas to be captured or imported for public display.
Please also send copies of your letters or faxes to the Mayor of Nagoya and the Governor of Aichi Prefecture, expressing your concerns about the display of cetaceans at the Nagoya Port Aquarium and any import of orcas to the aquarium. Many thanks!
